Rupi Kaur is a Canadian-Indian author and illustrator who Immigrated to Canada with her family during her adolescence. She was first publicly performing poetry in 2009, and later published her first piece of poetic literature, Milk & Honey, in 2014. This book has 4 chapters total, all serving different purposes and relevance to Kaur's own life experiences.
I chose this quote from Milk & Honey because there have been so many days, even late nights, where I have been so in my own head and desperate to be set free. Even for just a sliver of time. Whenever I feel like this, I would either pick up a novel and read myself into another realm, or I would take out a notepad and write what I felt until my fingers went numb and my brain felt empty. Even if I never looked at what I wrote again, it was a release. The tension would fade into comfort and the weight on my shoulders would turn into a warm, cozy blanket. And perhaps someday, if I chose, someone could read my story for themselves. Maybe someone will find connections and even comfort in relating to my thoughts, just like I felt reading Rupi's quote.
I think Rupi Kaur meant many things with this quote that can all tie together. Whether that be writing to let go of overwhelming emotions, or to sit with them and let them exist before you heal from the damage. To share an experience with those who understand, and educate those who may not. Having a voice that matters. I think it's all of that and more.

My dream trip is to go to the Bahamas. Or anywhere that I can pay to swim with sharks. But the Bahamas has nurse sharks and everyone who's ever swam with them has taken fire Instagram photos. Also, I love sharks. I would be traveling alone for this because adventure is my middle name. Just kidding! It's Mark. Gotcha again! It's Alice. But you will now never know for sure.
